Slab wood comes from a saw mill. Use the yellow pages, or try a store that sells wood stoves.
We lived in Rensselaer Co., and there were 3 that we got wood from. Remember, it will probably be wet and need to be dried.

Is There Anything That A Person Could Use To Keep Soot Off The Glass Of A Wood Burner Stove?

Posted by admin on 08 Feb 2010 | Filed under: Uncategorized

You won’t be able to keep it from getting on there but there are ways to clean it and also ways to prevent it from being really dirty. Make sure you burn seasoned wood only. Water in the wood makes for an unclean burn that will produce more dirt. I clean out my wood stove everyday before starting a new fire. Once you’ve cleaned out the ash, dampen a paper towel with water and dip it in the white ash you’ve just removed from your stove. Then wipe the paper towel with the ash on the glass. It will remove the black soot almost immediately. I repeat the process until the glass is clear. THen I use wet paper towel, no ash this time, and wipe the glass thoroughly. Finally, use a dry paper towel to dry the glass. If you do this frequently it should keep you glass looking nice.

Is It Okay To Burn Old Socks In A Wood Burning Stove?

Posted by admin on 06 Feb 2010 | Filed under: Uncategorized

Uh…no.
Even natural fibers such as cotton and wool should not be burned. Not only does this cause some noxious odor and gas, cotton and wool fibers do not burn well and can very easily cause a chimney or roof fire as they come brilliantly floating out of your chimney.
And if there is ANY synthetic blend in the fiber, definitely NOT, as burning these fibers will release highly toxic fumes and vapors.
