We are about to buy a steel wood burning stove is it bad to have a little bit of rust on the bottem? Or should we get that fixed?

if it,s very minor surface it should be okay but if it is extremely rusty stay away from it you can buy stove polish at hardware store to take care of surface rust.
A little bit of rust won’t hurt the stove or it’s ability to function one bit. If the bottom is rusted clear through, that’s another story.
